Community Asked to Support Final Stage of New Dressing Room Development

Portumna Rugby Club has launched The Final Maul, a community fundraising campaign to help complete the final fit-out and finishing works on its new dressing room development. The campaign invites individuals, families and businesses to contribute €100, with each supporter receiving a permanent place on the club’s prominent gable-end Supporters Wall.

Founded in 2002, Portumna Rugby Club has spent much of its history operating without its own permanent clubhouse or proper dressing room facilities. For years, players, coaches, parents and volunteers kept the club going through borrowed space, rented grounds, second-hand equipment and huge goodwill.

Despite those challenges, the club has grown steadily and now fields teams from minis through boys’ and girls’ youth rugby to adult level. In a town where hurling and camogie have deep roots, Portumna Rugby Club has built its own place in the community, drawing players from southeast Galway, north Tipperary and south Offaly.

The club opened its first permanent pitch in January 2023. The new dressing room building is the next major step. Tomas Whyte, Chairperson, explains “This is the closest Portumna Rugby Club has ever come to having a proper home of its own. The new building is now within touching distance of completion. The Final Maul is about asking the community to give us one final push so we can finish the job properly. The Supporters Wall will be a lasting thank you to the people and businesses who helped complete this important development,”
