Portumna is set to become the first location in County Galway to host a fully equipped Changing Places facility, following the announcement of newly awarded CLÁR funding. The application was submitted by Senator Anne Rabbitte on behalf of the Portumna Chamber of Commerce, securing vital investment for people with additional needs who require a custom-built, first-class toilet and changing space.

Senator Rabbitte, together with County Councillor Ivan Canning and local businessman Dick Ridge, worked tirelessly to highlight the importance of such a facility for the town. Their efforts have delivered a major boost for Portumna’s accessibility and inclusivity.

The development also marks an important milestone in national accessibility efforts. In 2022, Minister Peter Burke announced proposed legislation to support the rollout of Changing Places facilities in public buildings and suitable locations across Ireland. Portumna’s new facility will be the first of its kind in County Galway.

More than just a toilet or changing room, a Changing Places facility represents a genuinely liberating opportunity for individuals who are often restricted in where they can go—and for how long—due to a lack of appropriate amenities. Once completed, visitors with complex needs will be able to enjoy everything Portumna has to offer with confidence, knowing that a modern, fully accessible facility is available.

Additional key pieces of accessible infrastructure are also being explored to further enhance public buildings and public spaces in the town. Portumna continues to demonstrate its commitment to becoming a welcoming and inclusive destination for all.
